Central Home Heating and Cooling Systems

A central home heating and cooling system, also called an HVAC system, is a single system that heats and cools your entire home. It works by moving heated or cooled air through a network of ducts so that the air comes out of vents in different rooms and areas of your home. It operates using a central unit, like a furnace or heat pump, to heat or cool the air. A blower fan then distributes it through the duct system. Here are your options for central systems:

  • Furnace and Central Air Conditioner – This is the most traditional and common type of home HVAC system. It uses a furnace to heat the home in the winter, and an air conditioner to cool it in the summer. The air is distributed through the duct system and out the vents.
  • Central Heat Pump – Despite the name, a heat pump can both heat and cool a home. It uses a reversing valve to transfer heat from one location to another. In the winter, it pulls heat from the outside and moves it inside. In the summer, it pulls heat from inside your home and exhausts it outside. The most common type of system is an air-source heat pump. It connects to your home’s ductwork to distribute the heated or cooled air throughout your home.

Ductless Mini Splits and Zoned Cooling

If your home is old and doesn’t have ductwork, if the ductwork is damaged or outdated, or if you want to upgrade your heating and cooling system but don’t want to rely on air ducts any longer, you might consider a ductless cooling system. Ductless mini splits and zoned cooling are both very energy-efficient and can also be used as supplementary cooling for large, old, drafty, or sprawling homes – particularly ones with high ceilings or open floor plans. Here is a closer look at these options:

  • Ductless Mini Splits – This system doesn’t use ductwork and instead consists of an outdoor compressor/condenser unit and one or more indoor air handling units. They are incredibly effective and energy-efficient, as they allow for strategic zoned cooling. We recommend them if you want to lower your energy bills, supplement an old or outdated system, or provide auxiliary cooling to remote areas, like home additions, outdoor workspaces or sheds, offices, garages, and more.
  • Zoned Cooling – This is the process of dividing the home into several areas or zones, each with its own thermostat. This allows multiple family members independent control over specific areas of the home so that they have complete control over the temperature. It can reduce energy costs, eliminate hot and cold spots, and improve comfort. It can be used on ducted systems by installing motorized dampers. On a ductless system, each zone would have its own air handler and thermostat.

Alternative and Supplemental Systems

Because Southern Arizona summers are so extreme and the winters are relatively mild, some homeowners turn to alternative or supplemental heating and cooling systems. These can provide added support during extreme weather, or act as a more energy-efficient alternative to an HVAC system in mild weather. Some of the most common options are:

  • Evaporative or Swamp Coolers
  • Radiant Cooling
  • Solar Cooling
